This is a community-engaged project developed through my position as a Arts and Crafts Instructor at an overnight summer camp. I created a lesson plan around the idea of expressing your identity through illustrations/symbols and colours, which was facilitated with each session in the summer. Campers and staff were given a cotton strip as their base, along with a variety of other textile and mixed media materials. After prompting different ways identity could be expressed and introducing symbolism, campers and staff had the freedom to create their Identity Cord. By the end of the summer I compiled each cord and had woven them through a loom I made. This project was able to express all the individual identities coming together to create the community of Camp Kirk from that summer.
